A cervical disc herniation does not present only as neck pain. When a nerve root is affected, pain may spread from the shoulder into the arm and fingers; numbness, tingling or weakness in specific muscle groups may occur.
When is an assessment needed?
When the spinal cord is compressed, loss of dexterity in the hands, difficulty fastening buttons, imbalance or changes in walking may occur. These findings differ from simple muscular pain and require a neurological assessment.
How is the treatment plan determined?
Diagnosis depends on agreement between the examination and MRI findings. Treatment is personalised according to the severity of symptoms and the degree to which neural tissue is affected.
