A lumbar disc herniation can press on neural tissue and cause pain radiating from the lower back into the leg, numbness or loss of strength.
What symptoms may occur?
Pain spreading from the lower back to the buttock and leg, tingling, numbness and, in some patients, reduced muscle strength may occur. The location of symptoms varies according to the affected nerve root.
How is it diagnosed?
A clinical examination is the essential first step. When indicated, magnetic resonance imaging and other tests are interpreted together with the patient’s symptoms.
Treatment approach
Not every lumbar disc herniation requires surgery. Medication, activity modification and physiotherapy may be considered; surgery may become appropriate in the presence of progressive weakness or persistent symptoms.
