A cervical disc herniation occurs when a disc between the neck vertebrae places pressure on a nerve root or the spinal cord.
Symptoms
Neck and shoulder pain, pain radiating into the arm, numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand may occur. If the spinal cord is affected, changes in walking and fine hand movements may also be present.
Assessment
The neurological examination assesses muscle strength, reflexes and sensation. Imaging findings are considered alongside the patient’s symptoms rather than in isolation.
Treatment
The plan is personalised according to the site of compression, duration of symptoms and neurological findings. The need for surgery is discussed with the patient in detail.
