Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve at the wrist; cubital tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the ulnar nerve around the elbow.
Symptoms
Numbness that worsens at night, tingling in the hand, difficulty gripping and, at an advanced stage, muscle weakness may occur. The distribution of symptoms depends on the affected nerve.
Diagnosis
In addition to the examination, nerve-conduction studies may help determine the level and severity of the compression.
Treatment
Activity modification, splinting and medical treatment may be considered at an early stage. Surgical decompression may be appropriate in advanced or persistent cases.
